Surface designers create and develop prints and patterns which become the foundation for collections and product designs used in fashion, home décor, interior spaces, and niche markets (as in kids collections). The field of Surface Design has expanded to include textiles and fabric, fashion apparel, home furnishings, wall and floor coverings, decorative papers, and a broad spectrum of products.

The Surface Design Certificate Program is a sequence of nine (9) courses designed to offer training in the technical and creative skills required to begin a career or enhance skills in the textile/surface design field as a colorist, repeat artist, designer, or stylist. This comprehensive program of study prepares students for attaining an entry-level position as a textile production designer; launching a freelance surface design business; or enhancing skills to an existing career in areas of fashion, interior design, product design, and graphic design.

Through mentorship from instructor expertise, students achieve foundational knowledge in surface design basics, production, and professional applications while learning traditional and digital techniques. Ultimately students achieve professional quality portfolio work ready for design careers in surface design, fashion design, product design, and graphic design industries.
