To fully appreciate the role and purpose of clothing, it is vital to understand “costume” in an academic sense: the style of dress particular to a nation, period, or class. In this online course, students explore the history of costume from antiquity through to the twentieth century. Classes survey clothing styles and personal adornment as well as the aesthetic, functional, sociological, economic, and cultural factors that influence them.
