Botanical Illustration is the centuries-old art form of drawing plants for scientific documentation, educational information, and/or aesthetic purposes. Graphite is the fundamental medium for botanical illustration drawings. Botanical Illustration I includes an overview of modern botanical illustration and its uses, as well as basic graphite skills for planning and finishing a botanical drawing in graphite. Students become familiar with graphite techniques, including graphic application, line drawing, toning, layering, and textures and composition. Each class session builds skill development and confidence through demonstrations, discussions, and exercises, including the importance of plant observation.
