Course Description

Watercolor of berries and leaves plus watercolor paintbrushes and paints

The translucent quality and fluidity of watercolors, as well as its aqueous nature, inherent delicacy, and subtlety make it an excellent medium for capturing atmospheric and natural environments. In this 6-week course, students explore the techniques, styles, and materials, which are unique to this medium. Focus includes layering color to create contrast and texture in a two-dimensional composition. Examination of characteristics of transparent pigment, color mixing, basic brushstroke, and painting techniques are also covered. Learn about different weights and textures of paper, as well as the appropriate tools to complete the job. Projects are designed to expose students to various challenges specific to the medium and emphasis is placed on the basic rules of good design.
