Course Description

After mastering the earlier skill set of more traditional editing techniques and knowledge, students are challenged to employ more experimentation in their editing projects.  By working in the medium of the music video, students add a variety of new techniques to their skill set.  Pace becomes a primary focus, as well as creating a more direct emotional response in the viewer through the creation of “feeling states”.   Working solo, students select music, shoot original footage or use “found” footage, and edit it all together to create a music video project.  Students learn how to change motion, shift time, use variable speed, apply advanced video filters and experiment with compositing.  Approaches designed to speed workflow such as nesting sequences, managing media, and customizing the workspace is covered in hands-on tutorials and demonstrations.  Designing and authoring a DVD to present their music video project is also a key topic, and students learn how to present their work professionally in a variety of output formats.  Technical and aesthetic concepts and techniques are reviewed and employed by students in a series of editing exercises to reinforce earlier lectures and demonstrations.  Films and videos that demonstrate key concepts from lecture material are screened and discussed.   Audio software includes Pro Tools 8.  Video editing software includes Final Cut Pro.  DVD software includes DVD Studio Pro.
