Course Description

Still life is the ideal subject for the study of almost every aspect of painting and drawing. In this course we begin by learning to control composition, proportion and space. As the course develops we will thoroughly explore the workings of light and the way in which it relates to form. Pictorial organization in terms of value and color are a central theme in this class and studied through the work of the masters of still life, such as Chardin, Manet, and Morandi. This course is rigorous and highly organized, as the program is designed to produce a dramatic shift in the understanding of how to organize and execute a painting in any genre. Students may choose to work in a variety of mediums, including oil, acrylic, casein, or gouache.

Prerequisite: Some drawing experience suggested
