Course Description

Theatre spaces are designed to tell new stories, together with costumes, make-up, and amazing light effects. This is carefully crafted by designers, decorators, and artists who are skilled in the technical, historic, and creative aspects of scenic design. Through lectures, case studies, and experimental assignments, students will be introduced to the process of Scenic Design including scenography, lighting design, scenic design practice from concept to project programming, and scenic design history from ancient theatre to different types of contemporary productions. During a series of guided workshops, students will produce an original set design project based on a theatrical performance of their choice and build it as a scale model.

Prerequisites

It is recommended that students have basic drawing and art & craft skills (sketching, coloring, cutting and gluing paper, cardboard and light materials) and basic computer skills to achieve success in this class.
