Course Description

This course is an introductory graduate-level course tailored towards students who plan to enter into or apply to graduate graphic design programs or who are interested in pushing their practices further and developing their skills with challenging prompts, assignments, conversation, and constructive feedback. Students will engage in a rigorous and fast-paced curriculum focused on building typographic skill and sensitivity to letterforms and language as used in print and screen-based applications. Through exercises, readings, research projects, and conversation, students will build familiarity with historical and contemporary typefaces and their uses. They will also gain an understanding of how to analyze and create hierarchy, typographic systems, and connotation, and the power of typography to clarify, complicate, enhance, and/or subvert the meaning of text.
