Course Description

Movie poster design is what sells the film through a combination of “key art” imagery, typography, design, and an overall look and feel. Taught by Art Sims, a legendary key artist who has led award-winning projects for George Lucas, Spike Lee, Michael Jackson, Denzel Washington, and Will Smith, this 4-day workshop is designed for aspiring artists and designers with an interest in design, movie posters, film, and art direction. 

Students gain hands-on experience and knowledge with the key art production workflow as it exists in the entertainment industry. Topics include the business of key art design and case studies of the creative process. Students create a movie poster that is designed from concept to final execution under the guidance of industry expertise in 4 stages:

  • “The Ideation:” Discovering and planning designs and concepts 

  • “The Formation”: Sketching and preparing design elements (including illustration, typography, and photography).

  • “The Revelation”: Producing various compositions 

  • “The Judgment”: Executing final artwork (With special guest visit from the film industry marketing department).

Note:

IMPORTANT: All K-12 and Pre-College students are required to complete and return a K-12 and Precollege Mandatory Forms Packet prior to admittance into the classroom. Students will not be permitted to attend without this.
