Course Description

This course introduces the creative and technical aspects of designing and producing digital publications and ebooks. Students apply principles of effective visual communication to the planning and design of digital books and publications. Topics include document planning, grid layout, hierarchy, framing, modularity, typographic styling, image preparation, and interactive elements. Workflows for a variety of distribution channels, such as PDFs, e-readers, and page-flips, are addressed. Students complete weekly exercises that build toward a final project. This course helps prepare creatives for employment and freelancing in the editorial, traditional publishing, and self-publishing fields.

Prerequisites

A basic understanding of typography and graphic design principles is helpful.
