Course Description

Use letterforms to make lyrical, strange, and expressive imagery. In this 4-day workshop, students work with typography as material for visual design using tools and resources at the Otis Laboratory Press, fully functioning letterpress studio with four Vandercook proof presses and a comprehensive collection of wood & metal type. A brief history of the use of letterforms by 20th century designers provides perspective to this design form. Through demos, students are guided through the process of creating a poster through experimentation with typography. Topics include experimental processes and typographical approaches, which serve as inspiration for the design process.
