Course Description

Otis’s Type + Form: Pre-MFA Graphic Design Intensive course is tailored towards students who will be entering -- or are interested in applying to -- graduate Graphic Design programs in the coming year. This intensive course focuses on the rapid development of critical, formal, and research skills for students who may not have a formal undergraduate education in graphic design. This affordable, not-for-credit program -- which can be completed over 8 weeks -- serves as a powerful starting point for students planning on entering MFA design programs in the near future, giving hands-on practice with sophisticated explorations of typography, graphic form, design research, image- and meaning-making, and their applications for print and screen. In this course students can explore, experiment, research, critique, and gain advanced foundational experience with some of the tools, histories, contemporary discourses, and models of advanced graphic design practice, allowing participants to kickstart their own individual practices and careers, build their portfolios for applying to programs in the coming year, or prepare to hit the ground running in graduate design programs worldwide, including Otis’s own MFA Graphic Design program.

Students are required to have computer and internet access, as well as access to Adobe Creative Suite. This course is designed to be taken remotely, meeting on Zoom at a set time for 2 hours each week, and with 2 hours of flexible meeting time to be arranged by the instructor, for a total of 4 contact hours per course, per week.
