Course Description

Teach for Social Justice Through Experiential Learning. Bring your vision, program and project ideas to CWI’s 2021 VIRTUAL Summer Institutes, our acclaimed learning and design labs for Place Based Service-Learning and Sustainability. Institute workshops include inspiring learning from our Institute faculty that will support your teaching and programs, whether virtual or in person/hybrid. Work with educator-innovators in art and design, and community based participatory art, ethnography and social justice, and digital story telling. Our Institute partners include Otis College of Art and Design, Social and Public Art Resource Center, Smithsonian’s Digital Learning Lab and Kundhardt Film Institute, producers of the acclaimed film True Justice.  Our Virtual Summer Institutes are highly experiential, capturing the substance and alchemy of CWI professional events—without geographic limitations—allowing us to bring exciting new resources into our process. Place Based Service-Learning, Collaborative Ethnography, Storytelling, and Social Justice are emphasized as participants explore their own communities with new eyes. Readings, reflections, and design based planning will be done independently with rich opportunities to bring new thinking back to the group for critique and support. The Institute forms a powerful community of practice that develops both curriculum design and leadership-advocacy skills, along with pragmatic strategies for increasing buy-in and support from your colleagues and institution.

A limited number of FULL tuition scholarships are available for Otis BFA/MFA Students, Alumni and Faculty, as well as Otis Extension Art Education Certificate students.
