SILL100 - Illustration

Course Description

This class provides a comprehensive introduction to illustration, exploring foundational drawing and painting techniques, creative processes, art history, and narrative storytelling. Students work with traditional media such as graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, watercolor, and acrylic while developing their own artistic voice and visual style. A strong emphasis is placed on character development, with students creating original characters and learning how to use them to tell stories through comics, zines, illustrated books, narrative paintings, and other forms of sequential and narrative artwork. Through hands-on projects and discussions, students will explore composition, visual storytelling, and the relationship between character, image, and story while studying examples from illustration history and examining the artists, movements, influences, and creative approaches that have shaped the field. By the end of this course, students will have a strong foundation in traditional drawing and painting, character development, illustration history, and visual storytelling, along with a body of work that demonstrates their ability to develop original ideas and communicate stories through images.

• Tuition includes a non-refundable $200 deposit per course.
• IMPORTANT: All students enrolled in Summer of Art must submit the following Enrollment Agreement prior to admittance into the classroom. Students will not be permitted to attend without this.
• You will need to upload a photo and insurance card in order to register for youth courses.
