Course Description

According to the New York Times Style Magazine last year, the art world has started to embrace clay. This course approaches ceramics as a sculptural medium. Working with and against the dirtlike properties of clay, students in this course learn various forming techniques (slab, coil, pinch, wheel) as well as surface decoration, design, and glazing. Assignments move between technical execution and intuition. To broaden the appreciation of ceramics, this course examines the work of artists who utilize clay in their practices.
