Course Description

Using the LA landscape as subject and inspiration, this course takes advantage of the varied environments within the region. Subject matter ranges from LA’s modern buildings to the pastoral scenes of California’s coast and mountain ranges. In this course, students create their own compositions with pastels, a versatile medium that allows students to draw and create a painterly look simultaneously. Through the use of dry pastels on toned pastel paper, students explore the tremendous range of values that are possible, how to apply strokes that help create vibrant colors, and techniques that achieve strong darks and bright lights. The class will look at various examples of landscapes from California Westway Magazine covers from the 1930s, artwork of modern artists such as David Hockney, as well as the Pastel Art Society.
