Course Description

Free-hand Japanese paper cutting is an artful, unique, and improvisational process that can be adapted to applications including textiles, fine arts, graphic design, and surface design. Using folding, cutting, and gluing techniques with Origrami paper, students will create symmetrical and asymmetrical designs. They will practice tearing, gluing, observational cutting, basic cuts and 1, 2, 4, and 6-fold cutting variations. Topics include the history of Kirigami; Kiri-e; historical and current artists; and the global impact of cut paper art and designs.  Using a Japanese character as the base, students create a 2-season cut paper panel; they may advance to further cuts and variations in Japanese Kirigami Techniques II.
