Course Description

Think twice about tossing out that soup can. The use of the found object revolutionized twentieth-century modern art. Using commonplace materials, collage-based techniques, and three-dimensional elements, this course explores composition, materials, and scale as well as content, meaning, and interpretation. Students begin by making smaller two-dimensional works and progress toward larger, more complex mixed-media projects. Lectures discuss historical and contemporary artists that have pushed the boundaries with found objects: Hanna Hoch, Joseph Cornell, Robert Rauschenberg and more.
