Course Description

Documentary photography can bring about awareness, offer solutions, add substance, and shift points of view. It may chronicle current issues that will be etched in history. This course is about creating a visual narrative through an individualized photographic approach to subject matter, with a range of artistic and cultural sensibilities. Students explore how images are arranged to tell a story beyond words. Drawing from inspiration among historical and contemporary artists, they create photo essays that tell a story. Topics include defining a story, the power of photographic composition, color theory, and camera settings that create a variety of effects.
