Course Description

The photo book is now recognized as an art medium in its own right, one with unique, expressive, and narrative characteristics. Photographic and artist-book publishing also has a history of its own. In this course, students learn different approaches to making and publishing photo books. Classes delve into the structural, aesthetic, and narrative elements central to this medium, drawing from the Otis artist-book collection for inspiration. In addition, this course covers self-publishing and commercial publishing as well as issues to consider when submitting proposals to publishers. During the course, students produce three zines/booklets and one final photo book. Technical training in the Otis Lab Press, Photography Lab, and Digital Media Lab is provided.
