Course Description

Design an original project—from the initial concept to the final rendering—with the processes used by professionals. This course explores it all: research and analysis, concept generation, design development, engineering principles, material fundamentals, mechanical layout, ergonomic principles, 2D design sketching and rendering, and presentation techniques. Students are guided through the design process through weekly assignments and project reviews, with emphasis on developing innovative and compelling design solutions. Instruction also helps develop skills in thinking and communication, design language and aesthetics, and sustainable design.

- Through weekly Zoom meetings, students will work under the guidance of instructor expertise to achieve their work in a virtual studio environment.

Course Requirements:

  • This course requires you to have a computer with an internet connection, a camera and mic to participate in an online course setting; ZOOM Web Conferencing App and [Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Procreate or equivalent digital drawing software] installed. 

  • In addition, students will need access to a scanner or camera to digitally capture and transfer drawings to computer software.

  • As an Otis Extension student, you are eligible for select software discounts which can be found online under the software company’s education section of its website.
