Course Description

Moving beyond observational study and toward a depiction of more personal reality, Expressionist painters, both past and present, have depicted the human form through the expressive use of color and brushwork, exaggeration, and gesture. In this course, beginning to advanced students create expressionist figure paintings that resonate powerfully with their own emotions, concepts, and interior view of the world. Both live models and photographic images are used in dynamic moving poses and stationary long poses. Projects are theme-based, encouraging students to connect the figure with an environment that enhances the emotional quality of their paintings. Individual and group critiques, as well as lectures, supplement each class.

Prerequisite: Figure drawing experience is helpful, but not necessary
