Course Description

This advanced studio course builds on the fundamentals learned in Surface Design: Basics and Surface Design: Applications. Students explore new design concepts and themes for coordinated collections with a focus on finished product applications. Lectures include an overview of product types, design considerations for each type of material, and professional practice principles. Working with the instructor on a one-on-one basis, students complete design collections and product designs for a specific industry such as fashion, home décor, or niche market (as in baby/kids). Assignments are tailored to the student's area of interest: a home décor focus may include tile collection, dinnerware, and bedding; home accents focus may include wallpaper, rugs and pillows; and a fashion focus may include swimwear, loungewear, athletic wear, children's apparel, fashion accessories and scarves.

Students learn design considerations for various products, printing techniques and technical requirements and an overview of Surface Design business practices, including resume preparation, portfolio and website, marketing, revenue models, manufacturers, contracts, and copyrights.
