Course Description

Engage with works of art as catalyst and inspiration, to write a collection of Ekphrastic poems or pieces of prose. Ekphrastic poetry and prose spans centuries—from Homer’s epic poem The Iliad to contemporary writing by John Keats, Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Aziza Barnes, Danez Smith and Ocean Vuong. Ekphrasis offers a creative approach to describe, interpret, interact with, challenge, reimagine or respond to a work of art based on emotions, intellect, theme, comparison or free association. Acquire a range of craft skills to develop your voice, integrate imagery & metaphor and sharpen your focus on diction, syntax, musicality, tone etc. You may include aspects of the work of art or none at all—your poem or prose may simply be set in motion by your encounter with the artwork.

Art selections include painting, sculpture, installation, photography, music, film or personal artifacts. This course will enhance creativity and invigorate novice, emerging or established writers. Art inspires art!
