Course Description

This 4-week class teaches the basics of letterpress printing and making books. In the first three weeks, students learn foundational skills in letterpress printing including hand-set typing and letterpress printing technique. In the last class, students learn how to make a handmade book using their letterpress creations. Students use a Vandercook flatbed press and a tabletop flatbed Nolan Press for letterpress printing. This class takes place in the Otis Laboratory Press, a fully functioning letterpress studio with four Vandercook proof presses, over 200 metal typefaces, and a beautiful collection of wood type.
