Interior design sounds like a modern profession, but its roots can be traced as far back as the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans who had beautiful furnishings, textiles, ornaments, mosaics and murals in their homes and gardens. Carved, turned and gilded wood of every species, stone from great marble slabs to semi-precious pietra dura inlays, metals, mirrors and more have been used across the ages to craft exceptional and useful items for interiors. This survey course explores historical interiors and furnishings from early western civilizations through the present day including ancient, medieval, renaissance and baroque periods through to 18th, 19th and 20th c. French, English, and American periods as well as masters of contemporary furniture design and current trends.
