Course Description

The ability to produce vector graphics is a “must-have” skill for any modern artist or designer. Adobe Illustrator is the world’s leading vector graphics application used for producing professional quality logos, package design, signage and so much more. Students will be introduced to the basics of working with Illustrator to create compelling designs. This hands-on course introduces students to the basics of working with Illustrator to create compelling designs.

- Through weekly Zoom meetings, students will work under the guidance of instructor expertise to achieve their work in a virtual studio environment.


Specific coursework required for Certificate Students. All other students should have equivalent experience.

  • Optional: Students should consider backing up their portable disks via a Cloud-based storage system or an external hard drive to prevent potential file loss in the event of computer system failure.

Course Requirements:

  • This course requires you to have a computer with an internet connection; camera and mic to participate in an online course setting; ZOOM Web Conferencing App and Adobe Creative Cloud installed. 

  • As an Otis Extension student, you are eligible for select software discounts which can be found online under the software company’s education section of its website. 

  • Educational license is available here

  • Hardware Requirements: Laptop and/or Desktop Computer (Mac or PC – User’s Choice)

  • 2 screens:

    • Screen 1: (e.g. tablet device/iPad, laptop, desktop, or primary computer monitor) will  be used to watch the instructional demonstrations and class lectures. 

    • Screen 2: (e.g. secondary computer monitor, desktop / laptop computer) will be  dedicated to using the Adobe Creative Cloud applications.

Instructor Notes:

  • If using two separate computers, students should log each computer into the online classroom.
  • IMPORTANT: Both computers should have working audio with built-in web camera and microphone – external web cameras and USB microphone headsets are also an option. Only one computer needs to have its microphone and audio speakers enabled at any  given time. The other computer should be on mute.

  • This course includes 30 hours of class time plus at least 15 hours of homework time.

  • Synchronous: Taught through an online learning environment, allowing for the instructor and students to meet during scheduled times. Includes lectures, demos and discussions via Zoom.
